The Obama Tax Cuts!!!!!

In honor of two movies celebrating 30 years and two of my favorites, I am going to use references from The Empire Strikes Back and Superman II. Just follow me because you are going to say hmmm…

183 Days!!!!! From July 7, 2009 until February 4, 2010, the United States Senate had a super-majority of 58 Democrats and 2 Independents that could defeat any filibuster. With the majority of Democrats in the House of Representatives, the President of the United States could get anything passed with no roadblocks. Just take a look at some of the acts that the 111th Congress passed during that period.

Korean War Veterans Recognition Act
New Frontier Congressional Gold Medal Act
Miami Dade College Land Conveyance Act
Airline Flight Crew Technical Corrections Act
Human Rights Enforcement Act of 2009
Emergency Aid to American Survivors of the Haiti Earthquake Act

The full list of acts passed is here

For all the acts passed, there is one act not on the list: The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2009 or the Obama tax cuts. You won’t find that act on the list of passed acts because the Congress never held hearings on it, never debated it, never called for a vote, NOTHING. The Obama tax cuts could have maintained existing tax levels for those making fewer than 250,000 dollars. The act could have went into effect on January 1, 2011 12:00AM just as the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 or the Bush tax cuts are to expire on December 31, 2010 at 11:59PM. But that didn’t happen. Instead, we got a president on his knees giving in to preserve the very tax cuts for the rich, tax cuts he promised to end back in 2008. Speaking of kneeling, we have this legendary scene from Superman II

You are not the President. No one who leads so many could possibly kneel so quickly

Here is the President on his knees selling out his base and at the same time he is mad at liberals because they don’t want to sing Kumbayah with him. This begs the question, is Obama really a leader? I ask the question because Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and Eric Cantor would dare boast that the leader of the free world must “come to them” is insulting. A leader doesn’t go to the troops, the troops come to him or her and yet they expect Obama to come on bended knee and agree to whatever they propose. I suppose that’s how they roll. Now, back to the Obama tax cuts…oops Bush tax cuts, why this Congress, this President didn’t deal with the Bush tax cuts between July 2009 and February 2010 is beyond me. I would imagine Obama didn’t want to appear heavy-handed to keep the appearance of being one to work with the GOP like Lando Calrissian working with the Empire. What do you know? A scene from the Empire Strikes Back.

Perhaps you think you being treated unfairly?

For two years, everyone knew this day was coming. As a leader, President Obama is suppose to be thinking two steps ahead of everyone else not because he is smarter but because he was chosen to be in that role. I don’t want my leader looking weak especially if he could have prevented it. For two days, President Obama looked weak and lonely and lost while attempting to explain why America needed to extend the “Bush tax cuts.” For 183 days, Obama could have pushed Pelosi and Reid to debate keeping the cuts for the middle-class before they were set to expire or create a new tax act in 2009. He had the numbers to get it done but did nothing and now he claims that Republicans were holding the middle-class and the unemployed hostage. Uh-oh, looks like someone just discovered Kal-El’s weakness. Here is another scene from Superman.

This Superman is nothing of the kind. I have discovered his weakness. He cares. He actually cares for these Earth people.

A leader would not allow his people to be put in harm’s way yet Obama allowed McConnell and Boehner and Cantor to basically blackmail him into compliance. He discovered for all the speeches, the smiles and larger than life persona, in the end he was just a puppet. A puppet that had his strings magically reattached to his body and now he is doing what he is told to do. As one who voted for this man, I am truly sad. Sad that the leader of this great nation is forced to make deals at the expense of the people. Yes, the middle-class gets to keep its tax cut and yes unemployment benefits are extended for another 13 months but these things should have been done because it was the right thing to do not because you give me something and I will give you something. That’s just makes it feel dirty like the people weren’t worthy of help. I expect that the Democrats will approve the extension because Obama put them on the spot and they don’t want to look like the party of no, so to end this I want those who believe that Obama made the right choice to deal with the Republicans to remember this scene from ESB. Until next time.

I am altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.”
